Describe and evaluate Milgram’s agency theory [12] Milgram’s agency theory basically states that you the state of mind you are in determines if you’re obedient or not. He argued that normally we operate in the autonomous state, where you assert control over yourself and what we do. An example of this is when faced with danger, most people will turn away to try and avoid conflict. Even if you decide not to walk away, this is still the autonomous state because you’re deciding what to do. There is also the agentic state which says you are subconsciously acting as an agent to some authority figure and that you do what they tell you because you feel as if you are an agent of that person. The case involves the issue of discrimination and harassment, as both of the workers were being treated unfairly due to the fact they were pregnant. Gender discrimination can be related to Emile Durkheim’s idea that societies are built on ‘social facts’, he suggested that these ‘social facts’ are aspects of social life that shape our actions as individuals, and influence the way we think, feel and act (Clegg and Dunkerley, pp. 23). It is a human right, not a privilege, for a woman to work while she is pregnant. Our society is developed around a social structure that creates barriers for women that continues to disadvantage them in the workforce. In this situation, the needs of men are treated as the norm and women are ignored (Moyle, 2002). As such, men are seen as in a position of power, where women are limited by their choices yet we accept this framework as the logical truth. â€Å"More than half of the airline’s workforce was female †¦We are one of the only companies in Australia with 50 per cent female representation in our executive team† (The Herald Sun, 2011). Even though there is an increasing amount of women participating in the workforce, they are not treated with the same benefits and respect as males. In 2001, the Human Rights Commission (2002) received 85% of complaints under the Sex Discrimination Act, 30 % of that were on the base of pregnancy discrimination. Increasing women part taking in the workforce has been considered by many, as an opportunity of women’s liberation, as well as a sign of breaking down the barriers of inequality. However this mpression of liberation is limited. The assumption that women can have it all is slowing leaning to a yes but due to the current workplace and societal attitudes, women are limited to the opportunities offered unlike men. Women are restricted by the change in their workforce behaviour and the unsuccessful attempts to change the perspective of gender roles at home (Moyle, 2002). Equality cannot be reached while women are still limited, restricted and disadvantaged in the labour mark et just because they can bear children. In times of pregnancy, there are still various employers who believe that women are not efficient and do not work as productively, while pregnant. In a number of cases many pregnant women were either demoted or fired, and in some cases they were denied of training or further promotional opportunities (Moyle, 2002). For instance, â€Å"Both of the women positions were made redundant as they confirmed they were pregnant or returning from maternity leave, despite the fact that the model employer was advertising and recruiting for the same position† (The Sydney Morning herald, 2011). The perception of the functionalist theory connects to Durkheim’s ideas of ‘social facts’, it views society as a system of interrelated parts that works together in order to maintains stability and the survival of humanity (Krieken et al. 2006, pp. 3). The approach believes, gender differences contribute to preserving the social stability of society, that women and men should perform tasks that are expected for them (Giddens et al. 2009, p. 306). Because of this people are categorize into groups based on gender, race, education or class. The affects of taking on a particular status in society requires both positive and negative behaviours. Project Management in Construction

Question: Discuss about the Project Management in Construction. Answer: During the first quarter of last year, I have associated myself with the construction project of a residential building in Sydney, Australia. The development of the residential building constitute of design and construction of eight storied building with 32 apartments for providing a green solution for naturally maintaining the temperature of the apartments. Apart from that, the construction project involved reducing the electricity consumption with the implementation of natural lighting sources and electricity-efficient lighting design with natural HVAC system. The stakeholders and shareholders of the project, involved with this particular project were concerned about the effective completion of the building while significantly reducing the temperature naturally. In addition to that, the construction of the building needed to follow the laws and legislation of Australia for providing safety and security of the people residing in the building. For the completion of this residential building, I was provided the responsibilities of maintaining the quality and timely completion of the construction project. During the development of the project, I have come across various barriers that have the potential to negatively impact the progress of the project. The project was aimed to complete within a time limit of 2 years. During the initial phase of the project, the lack of complexities in the designing has taken more time than allocated. For the timely completion of the project, I have done the revised scheduling and work breakdown structure of the project. I have further ensured the remaining events of the construction are completed according to the revised scheduling. I have regularly kept track of the construction. The socio-political risks in the construction project played a significant role in hindering the development of the building. I have found that the development of the valet parking area on the front of the building was restricted to the construction site. I have communicated with the senior stakeholders of the project and provided proper documentation to the legal authorities. After detailed communication session and permission, the land lease for the construction of the residential building along with the parking area was revised. The installation and development of the natural HVAC system within the residential building required the knowledge and skills of the architect, civil engineer and the employees. The initial employee lacks the skills for developing the HVAC system while maintaining the laws and legislation of Australia. I have advised the project manager for replacing the employees with skilled and experienced employee for the safe and effective installation of the HVAC system. The hiring of new employees for proving efficiency in the construction project has increased the budget of the project. I have discussed with the financial department and the project stakeholders while preparing a new budget plan for completing the construction of the residential building within new financial resources. In addition to that, in terms of ensuring the quality of the construction, I have reviewed and verified the planning and design of the residential building with the initial plan of the feasibility study. Therefore, with the continuous monitoring and reviewing, I have effectively managed the barriers involved in the project and at organizational levels.
