Analysis of Workplace Behaviour Sociology Free Essays
Many issues in the line of employment relations are contentious and most likely to provoke strong opinions and debate. Through the years, the concept of workplace behaviour has become increasingly important as the Australian workplace is constantly changing and evolving. However the issues of equal employment initiatives, still remains a common problem in the work environment. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Workplace Behaviour: Sociology or any similar topic only for you Order Now One of the most controversial issues occurring in todayââ¬â¢s society is gender discrimination. Women are becoming very significant in the workplace, as more and more women are participating and part taking in to all types of work. Yet, regardless of these factors, women, especially working mothers, have no place in the workforce. In recent Australian papers, the topic of pregnancy discrimination has spiralled as Virgin Blue Airlines, an industry leader in supporting mothers, is involved in a discrimination case against two of their female employees (The Sydney Morning herald, 2011). The case involves the issue of discrimination and harassment, as both of the workers were being treated unfairly due to the fact they were pregnant. Gender discrimination can be related to Emile Durkheimââ¬â¢s idea that societies are built on ââ¬Ësocial factsââ¬â¢, he suggested that these ââ¬Ësocial factsââ¬â¢ are aspects of social life that shape our actions as individuals, and influence the way we think, feel and act (Clegg and Dunkerley, pp. 23). It is a human right, not a privilege, for a woman to work while she is pregnant. Our society is developed around a social structure that creates barriers for women that continues to disadvantage them in the workforce. In this situation, the needs of men are treated as the norm and women are ignored (Moyle, 2002). As such, men are seen as in a position of power, where women are limited by their choices yet we accept this framework as the logical truth. ââ¬Å"More than half of the airlineââ¬â¢s workforce was female â⬠¦We are one of the only companies in Australia with 50 per cent female representation in our executive teamâ⬠(The Herald Sun, 2011). Even though there is an increasing amount of women participating in the workforce, they are not treated with the same benefits and respect as males. In 2001, the Human Rights Commission (2002) received 85% of complaints under the Sex Discrimination Act, 30 % of that were on the base of pregnancy discrimination. Increasing women part taking in the workforce has been considered by many, as an opportunity of womenââ¬â¢s liberation, as well as a sign of breaking down the barriers of inequality. However this mpression of liberation is limited. The assumption that women can have it all is slowing leaning to a yes but due to the current workplace and societal attitudes, women are limited to the opportunities offered unlike men. Women are restricted by the change in their workforce behaviour and the unsuccessful attempts to change the perspective of gender roles at home (Moyle, 2002). Equality cannot be reached while women are still limited, restricted and disadvantaged in the labour mark et just because they can bear children. In times of pregnancy, there are still various employers who believe that women are not efficient and do not work as productively, while pregnant. In a number of cases many pregnant women were either demoted or fired, and in some cases they were denied of training or further promotional opportunities (Moyle, 2002). For instance, ââ¬Å"Both of the women positions were made redundant as they confirmed they were pregnant or returning from maternity leave, despite the fact that the model employer was advertising and recruiting for the same positionâ⬠(The Sydney Morning herald, 2011). The perception of the functionalist theory connects to Durkheimââ¬â¢s ideas of ââ¬Ësocial factsââ¬â¢, it views society as a system of interrelated parts that works together in order to maintains stability and the survival of humanity (Krieken et al. 2006, pp. 3). The approach believes, gender differences contribute to preserving the social stability of society, that women and men should perform tasks that are expected for them (Giddens et al. 2009, p. 306). Because of this people are categorize into groups based on gender, race, education or class. The affects of taking on a particular status in society requires both positive and negative behaviours. Each group is accompanied by a number of norms which define how people are perceived and expected to act (Krieken et al. 2006, pp. 3). In organizational behaviour theory, perception is defined as the way in which people perceive, view, and understand others and the surroundings around them (Patil, S, 2008, pp. 3). Perception severely impacts on the attitudes employees have of others and themselves, as well as the decisions they make within an organization (Patil, S, 2008, pp. 3). An example of this is, according to The Sydney Morning herald (2011) an employee of Virgin Blue suggested that ââ¬Å"All females should be on contracts so that when they get pregnant it is easy for the company to get rid of them. â⬠This perception reinforces the message that women are not welcome in the workplace and they donââ¬â¢t belong, indicating that a woman only suitable place is at home. Women, who are able to have children, should view pregnancy as a privilege, being able to give birth, able to give life, rather than something they are penalised for and discriminated against. The greatest concern is the amount of women accepting this sort of discrimination. It has been reported that there is a trend over the past years of more women working and fewer women choosing to have a family or limiting the number of children they have, because of the conditions of the workforce (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, 1999 pp. 1). It appears that they allow this sort of inequality because they believe discrimination is a part of life, that pregnancy is a personal choice. This clearly indicates that the perception of society and social impact, highly affects the way women view the subject. We cannot ignore the fact that workplace discrimination and harassment in relation to pregnancy still remains a true concern for many women in our society. Regardless of status, industry, or level of education, or in the characteristics of age, race or religion, for many women they will always be placed at a disadvantage because of the social facts and perceptions of society (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, 1999, pp. 7). However, attitudes towards the ââ¬Ëworking womenââ¬â¢ are gradually changing. The relationship between an employer and employee is one of mutual rights and obligation, as more and more employers are addressing and acknowledging the importance of the inequality issue, we step in to an economy of transition. Henceforth it helps in creating an challenging attitude for the people who helps in conducting the segments and the benefits of the customer types and thereby the target audience analysis seems to be effectively made according to the approaches created for the business and thereby the establishment of the business appeals are created for the enhancement of the structure of the business regarding the enhancement of the services towards the targeted customers or the audi ences. Communication Objectives Marketing Communication Objectives are very common and popular term and it is a long term goals process, and where the marketing campaigns are designed to dive up the value of any brand for over time. In comparison to sales promotions, that is short- term stimulus process to buy, communication goals are going to be succeed when you reinforcement of your brand then the customers has satisfied and then the customers need or want that brand. Increase Awareness Increasing the brand awareness is not only one of the most common marketing communication objectives; it is also very typical for any new company. When you entered the market then at first you introduce your company, knowing your branded products or service to the people after that you exit from that place (Jung, 2013). This might incorporated broadcast commercials or print ads that represent the whole outline of your company. The whole objectives are become very well known and also very remarkable. The company has been established to often use a closely related to the goal of building or maintaining increase the mind awareness. Change Attitudes Another common communication objective is to change the company or brand name of any products. Sometimes misinterpretation of the companies product or service is very much increase in the market. Advertising is the process and that is a way to address them directly and describe your product properly. In other hand negative publicity is growing up any companies because those companies are involved in a business scandal or unsetting activities. BP has been invested the millions of dollars for advertising the companys product as well as explain the companys cleanup efforts to the public following. Influence Purchase Intent For communication objective the main key is to motivate the customers for buy the product. This motivation process is normally done through the advertising of the product, which is involves the strength of your superior benefits to the user and it is usually related to competitors. Sports drinks are commercially showing the athletes competing (Mihart, 2012). Stimulate Trial Purchase Two communication objectives are to stimulate trial use and drive repeat purchases which is closely related and separated. For selling the goods free trial or product samples are common techniques. To the persuasion of the customer free trial or product samples are the best techniques to expand the business. For the first time free trials or product samples are common techniques to the persuasion of the customers to try the product. To take away the risk for fulfils the goal and to experience the brand get the customer. Once on the first purchase you get them (Young, 2010). Drive Brand Switching For getting the customers the specific goal is followed who buy the competing products to switch the brand. The pittance of tide detergent is normal than the other leading brands. In competitive market the comparative ads intended to influence the brand switching, tide detergent is pitted against the other leading brand (Narasimhan, 2006). The benefit of this goal is the customers buy the product which means the strategy of the business is established. You must be gain the persuasion of the customers that the product and service is superior. Alternative The alternative method helps in considering the effectiveness of the communication skills that are requisite for the enhancement of the organization. It thereby helps in creating the enhancement of the support which helps in the enhancement of the support activities and thereby the considerations are made. The campaigning helps in the creation of the support activities and thereby the consideration of the approach helps in the enhancement of the approaches in order to create the creative strategy is also enhanced (Perrey, Spillecke and Armstrong, 2011). This thereby helps in gaining the objectives that seems to be requisite for the marketing mix approaches and thereby the appropriate strategy is seemed to be gained with the help of campaigning. The consideration is used for understanding the characteristics that seems to be requisite for the purpose of attracting the consumers. The business strategies help in covering the ideas that are represented in the form of the campaigning for the purpose of attracting the customers. Media Plan Media is playing significant role is modern organization as it has great contribution in the marketing and communication to the business entities. The organizations are mostly dependent on the media for the marketing activities of the organization. The contemporary media is segregated into three different parts, which are print media, electronic media and social media. The print and electronic media are traditional media and used by the organization from the long time(Potter, 2005). Social media is modern phenomena in this matter, with the development of internet technologies the use of internet is increasing and simultaneously growing the use of social media, which are the facilities of the internet and the social media has significant impact on the consumers as it has direct impact on the consumers and it is more personal thus, the consumers are mostly influence by the social media. Therefore, the contemporary organizations provides great efforts to develop effective social media p lan and strategies so that the organization can reach to the people more effectively besides this, as the social media is effective media at the same time it is cost effective also(Scott, 2007). Therefore, the business organizations have to invest minimal amount and get effective responses from the social media publicity of the products and services of the organization. Thus, the company should use the social media more efficiently for better outcome along with the traditional print and electronic media. Measuring IMC Plan Effectiveness The measurement of the IMC plans effectiveness is judged by the effective creation of the tools that are used by the Integrated Marketing Communication. The plan of the communication helps in the creation of the plan for the enhancement of the information and thereby the measurement helps in the creation of the impact. The primary tools depict the advertising, sales and the promotion, interactive and the internet media and the public relation or the publicity. The consideration also helps in the positive impact for the organization in approaching maximum numbers of customers with implementing the above tools by the help of the information technology (Shimp, 2010). It thereby also helps in achievement of the appropriate response level for the hierarchy dimensions. It also helps in creating opportunity for the customers that helps in the creation of structure for the enhancement of the system. Henceforth the appropriate measurements can be achieved by the organization with the usage of the IMC as a tool in for the purpose of marketing its products and services provided. It also helps n mitigating all the necessary issues that seems to be depicted by the help of the direct form of marketing (Smith and Taylor, 2004). Conclusion In order to establish a business organization and to accomplish the goal and objectives of the organization marketing plays a vital role. Moreover, in the cut throat competition market, if an organization wants to survive and carry out continuous growth and development, the organizations have to adopt integrated marketing and communication strategies, which help the company to communicate with its consumes as well as make them aware about the latest products and services of the company. It helps in reducing the cost of marketing thus, it is cost effective and at the same time it is most effective to influence the customers behavior(Scott and Jacka, 2011). It helps the customers to know about the products and services of the company. It boosts the business of the company. The print, electronic and social media can effectively use to improve the integrated marketing and communication plan of an organization that help in the development and growth of the organization. Project Management in Construction
Question: Discuss about the Project Management in Construction. Answer: During the first quarter of last year, I have associated myself with the construction project of a residential building in Sydney, Australia. The development of the residential building constitute of design and construction of eight storied building with 32 apartments for providing a green solution for naturally maintaining the temperature of the apartments. Apart from that, the construction project involved reducing the electricity consumption with the implementation of natural lighting sources and electricity-efficient lighting design with natural HVAC system. The stakeholders and shareholders of the project, involved with this particular project were concerned about the effective completion of the building while significantly reducing the temperature naturally. In addition to that, the construction of the building needed to follow the laws and legislation of Australia for providing safety and security of the people residing in the building. For the completion of this residential building, I was provided the responsibilities of maintaining the quality and timely completion of the construction project. During the development of the project, I have come across various barriers that have the potential to negatively impact the progress of the project. The project was aimed to complete within a time limit of 2 years. During the initial phase of the project, the lack of complexities in the designing has taken more time than allocated. For the timely completion of the project, I have done the revised scheduling and work breakdown structure of the project. I have further ensured the remaining events of the construction are completed according to the revised scheduling. I have regularly kept track of the construction. The socio-political risks in the construction project played a significant role in hindering the development of the building. I have found that the development of the valet parking area on the front of the building was restricted to the construction site. I have communicated with the senior stakeholders of the project and provided proper documentation to the legal authorities. After detailed communication session and permission, the land lease for the construction of the residential building along with the parking area was revised. The installation and development of the natural HVAC system within the residential building required the knowledge and skills of the architect, civil engineer and the employees. The initial employee lacks the skills for developing the HVAC system while maintaining the laws and legislation of Australia. I have advised the project manager for replacing the employees with skilled and experienced employee for the safe and effective installation of the HVAC system. The hiring of new employees for proving efficiency in the construction project has increased the budget of the project. I have discussed with the financial department and the project stakeholders while preparing a new budget plan for completing the construction of the residential building within new financial resources. In addition to that, in terms of ensuring the quality of the construction, I have reviewed and verified the planning and design of the residential building with the initial plan of the feasibility study. Therefore, with the continuous monitoring and reviewing, I have effectively managed the barriers involved in the project and at organizational levels. The philosophy of psychology
Introduction Over time philosophers have taken great interest in inquiring about the various scientific fields. For instance, they have taken interest in investigating the grounds on which certain scientific fields are established.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The philosophy of psychology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The philosophers have thus made great inroads into investigating physics, biology and, psychology in great detail. But, philosophers have on the other hand identified various philosophical issues about these sciences that need to be investigated. In a broad sense, philosophy of psychology is an attempt to place psychology within the wider spectrum of intellectual investigation. It is against such a backdrop that this paper sets out to attempt an inquiry that will look at the various segments of psychological inquiry as postulated. The paper will also give an inkling to the several claims in ps ychology as well as shed some light on the interrelatedness between psychology and other sciences. Philosophy of psychology Psychology comprises various branches. It is these branches that philosophy of psychology attempts to investigate. Since the branches are based certain foundations, the philosophy sets to investigate these with a view to making them clear or providing further information that clarify their foundation that clarify their foundations. According to Bermudez (2005), Philosophy of psychology can be described as ââ¬Å"an investigation of the philosophical foundations of psychologyâ⬠. He further shows the distinct nature of the philosophy of psychology since its domain of investigation overlaps by that ââ¬Å"domain of inquiry which the philosophers have taken to be their own preserve (Bermudez 2005). Thus, the major concern of philosophy of psychology is has to do with mind and cognition. Philosophers of psychology have to a greater extent been faced with the si tuation of borrowing from cognitive science. This field, thus, deals with great aspects of science and cognition. Mental States Mental states constitute an area that has been of concern to psychology. The place of these states has been reached through both experience and experiment. Thus, experiments suggest the poor way through which people approach probability. Also, when faced with probabilistic problem, many would end up advancing wrong judgments. This means that people do ascribe several characteristics to mental states (Oââ¬â¢Donohue Kitchener 1996). It is further seen that each individual can assess own mental states through the process of introspection. Here one clearly observes own mental states. But this is in contrast to the idea that evidence can only be adduced from public view i.e. third person view.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Behaviorism Behaviorism is a schoo l of psychology which tries to answer the question whether the aspects of psychology could be analyzed through scientific theory (Symons Calvo 2009). The behaviorists rejected the idea that mental states had something to do with psychology. John Watson, the father of behaviorism, felt that psychology could still exist without associating its mental states, the mind and even content. He thus advanced the aspect of stimulus and response. He felt that those were the major aspects that governed behavior. This is unlike the earlier insistence on psychology and introspection. Watson rejected introspection because, he claimed, it could not clearly be scientifically analyzed. Introspection as a scientific process, has elicited a lot of debate as the results could not be reproduced. Behaviorism actually relegated the reliance on unobservable phenomena to the periphery. The mental aspects that were acceptable were those that exhibited observable entities. Behaviorists majored in finding out why certain behaviors only occurred under certain environments (stimuli). They, therefore, came up with two accounts. These accounts were classical conditioning and operant conditioning. One peculiar thing about these two accounts is that they had nothing to do with the mentalist aspects. Pavlov, in classical conditioning posited that various animals do respond to certain environmental conditions (stimuli), thereby, defining behavior. A sound would be made and food given. The dog, after noting this pattern of events, would start salivating. So, the dog would start salivating just at mere hearing of this sound produced. The operant conditioning theory was developed by B.F Skinner and Thorndike. This has since put behavior into two types; those responses associated when specific stimuli are presented e.g. food, and those not associated with food (operants). Skinner felt that whenever any behavior is reinforced, the particular action gets developed. For example, should a rat receive fo od by pressing the lever, it will continue pressing it. It is therefore against the role that behaviorism has played on psychology that the theory has gained a lot of ground. But, behaviorism has been rejected due to some flaws. This rejection came out of its limited scope of explanation. One other major problem with the theory is that Skinnerââ¬â¢s view fails to explain the daily behavior of humans, for instance, it does not fully explain how language is acquired by children. Children learn it without any form of conditioning.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The philosophy of psychology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The major critique is that the theorists fail to identify other intervening factors that come between behavior and stimuli. It is this major failure that psychologists have felt it crucial to also include the major factors that also intervene. Chomsky has been the first critic to state the wea kness of the theory, especially when it comes to linguistic acquisition. Thus, he said, in as much as the environment of the learner is crucial to language acquisition, the role of the learnerââ¬â¢s individual contribution cannot be ignored. Another problem with behaviorism is that its explanations are only acceptable when applied to simple animals subjected to highly controlled experimental environments only. The assertion is further weakened in complex organisms. For instance, the issue of language acquisition in children cannot be simply explained as the psychological behaviorists seem to posit. When such complex behavior patterns are put in consideration, the behaviorist explanation becomes more implausible. Cognitivism Cognitivism arose out of the awakening that behaviorist approach could not, strictly address some pertinent problems in exhibited as earlier seen (Thagard 2007). Thus, Noam Chomsky, through his works on language acquisition, punched holes into behaviorist appr oach. As behaviorists tried to explain the acquisition of all behavior through specific mechanisms of learning, Chomsky felt that some behavior patterns are governed by a certain level of innateness. He supported his claim of innateness in some of the organisms because some of the behaviors came quite early in the life of the animals, without even the animals having gone through any learning processes. Chomsky found the human languages as being too complex and inherently innate. For instance, he says that speakers can comprehend and even produce new sentence never heard or spoken before (Thagard 2007). This means that the acquisition was not as a result of behaviorist mechanisms. Behaviorists, for instance, are unable to explain why language is productive. This makes the claims by the behaviorists further implausible. From this finding, Chomsky suggests that there must be some sets of process that take place inside the human mind that are behind this issue of language productivity. He feels that the set of mechanisms are mentally represented. He refers to the rules as ââ¬Å"generative grammarâ⬠. Chomsky and other theorists felt that the human mind, just like the computer, performs operations based on a set of rules and mechanisms that inform behavior development. These representations appear in the form of structures of data such that, just like in computers, they stand for real objects and aspects in the real world. The cognitivists feel that these internal representations, when mapped with outcomes, they are able to tell which outcomes are appropriate and which ones are not.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Nativism This theory also benefited from Chomskyââ¬â¢s contribution. In it, it is believed, the human mind has inbuilt innate structures that enhance our cognitive capabilities. The innate capabilities include concepts, mechanisms and even beliefs. The nativists actually believe the mind comes equipped with a well-built innate structure (Botterill Carruthers 1999). The notion of innateness has, however, caused much confusion. Empiricists and nativists only differ in the amount of innateness that the human mind is composed of. Another controversy is that if the innateness develops with time is it right to refer to it as ââ¬Ëinnate?ââ¬â¢ An innate trait should be one that is not influenced by any external condition or environment (Bermudez 2005). Modularity Modularity, according to Fodor, refers to those distinct cognitive processes present in the human mind. As Fodor referred to them as ââ¬Ëmodulesââ¬â¢, Chomsky referred to them as ââ¬Å"mental organsâ⬠. It is a ctually believed that the human mind is modular and that various modules act differently while handling different tasks. Conclusion The essay has looked at the various aspects of philosophy of psychology. Philosophers have greatly contributed to the foundations of psychology. Though philosophy and psychology could be viewed as separate, there is need to encourage further the philosophical research into foundations of psychology to come up with new banks of knowledge. I.R.I.
I.R.I. There are four parts to the I.R.I. theme. The first part is illusion (what seems to be.) The next one is reality (what is.) The last part is ideal (what should be.) It should be perfect, moral, and be in God's way. The fourth part is the artist. The artist exposes illusion by showing the reality. Their disillusions can be either bad or good. When they are bad, we don't like it and it tends to make life harder. When it is good it moves us toward the idea and makes us better people.Romanticism is emotion as opposed to reason. Characters act out of emotion instead of reason. We approach the story on a level of emotion not realistically. We suspend disbelief. Nature can effect our emotions as in storms and foggy weather. It can also speak to us through symbols that are tangible. This represents something abstract, or ideal. We also experience these through our senses. The third part of romanticism is supernatural, unusual, gothic, exotic, and grotesque. The fourth is mythology and folklor e (Greek and Roman). The fifth part is emphasis on self reliance and independence. Which are the characters. The last part is nationalism. We use these themes to comprehend the story we read better.

Industrial revolution - Essay Example The revolution took place around the end of 18th century and early 19th century. The overall economic outlook of Englandââ¬â¢s society saw a turn and twist in the manner in which it operated previously, and this was formally coined in by Arnold Toynbee (Williams, 2011, 138) who gave it the name of revolution and since then the term has been referred to as revolution in form of modernization of society across the world. Apart from the form of practices, it had its effect on the different styles of leadership and ruling over individuals in society as well. Keywords: Development, steel, economic development Characteristics of revolution: It brought about change in the life styles. Prior to it people relied on agriculture and lived a simple life style that was restricted to the rural part of the countries. With the advent of the industrial revolution, industries were developed; machinery came about into usage, people started adopting the new means. Although the revolution was of total ly different pattern as compared to the previous revolutions yet it had an impact on the social sphere, economic sphere and political sphere within different societies. The countries with greater economic development were in position to dominate the situation and enforce their conditions and political systems upon other nations. Imperialism was a sequence of the entire event that took place as a result of dominant and stronger economic states against the weaker ones (Kesselmae et.al, 2011, 51). In the social sphere, it allowed for jobs creation and overall rise in the income level. The ultimate impact was that of improvement of the economy. Per capita incomes (Sng, 2010), G.D.Ps, annual budgets and other social and economic factors saw progress up to multiple folds which was completely unprecedented. Countries with more progress in the industrial sector ended up becoming developed states and those with little access and advantages extraction from the industrial means and mechanism r emained underprivileged and under developed. The impact was directly visible upon the people within those societies and the overall standards of life were of little attractive outlook with regard to income and prosperity level. The earliest traces of Industrial revolution can be traced back in to the English society where people started using the tools and devices at domestic level, although the term came into force and knowledge in France first(Clark, 2000, 5) . This in turn gave rise to the industry at local level and people started progressing with the overall prospect of various professions. Machine, tools, automation, iron, steel were few of the terms that were trade mark of the concept of industrial development that took place in Europe. The spread of development in form of concepts of industrialization did not stop in the social spheres of England only ,rather it made inroads into other societies of Europe as well and later on extended beyond the European continent and United States of America got engulfed into the overall developmental process. The benefits and modifications that resulted from industrial development were not only limited to manufacturing industries or heavy machinery usage, rather they enabled the communication advancements in form of the building of roads, and covering these roads with automobiles of all kinds.

Ethical Dilemma Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Ethical Dilemma - Essay Example Clearly, those who remain in good standing achieve many benefits, including income and public recognition. These things are rewards for the achievement and maintenance of high moral and ethical standards. The esteem that derives from membership in an elite group makes professional status desirable. In order to choose the best solutions to the problems identified in two cases, it is important to apply ethical theories and moral standards. As a passenger in version 1, I would pull the lever and save lives of 5 people. This decision is based on utilitarianism referred to by some as the consequentialist ethical theory. It is expressed in the form that asserts that people should always act so as to produce the greatest ratio of good to evil for everyone. as the utilitarian, I believe that when choosing between two actions, the one that produces the greatest net happiness should be the one chosen (Donaldson et al. 2002). Where most of them disagree with one another is in the area of how this principle should be applied. There are also several stated weaknesses in this concept. It ignores actions that appear to be wrong in themselves; it espouses the concept that the end justifies the means; the principles may come into conflict with that of justice seems to associate justice with ef ficiency rather than fair play); and it is extremely difficult to formulate and establish satisfactory rules of application (Bentham 2000). I would pull the lever because it is ethical to save lives of people and choose the decision which benefits the majority. Utilitarianism manifests itself in two major forms. The stronger of the two is so-called act-utilitarianism. Under this system, the moral agent considers the consequences of only the action under consideration. The second system is called rule-utilitarianism. Here the moral agent considers a set of rules by which life should be lived. The basis of accepting or rejecting a rule is whether the consequences of everyone following the rule will result in the maximum probable good consequences. Rule-utilitarianism may be regarded as a weaker form of utilitarianism than act-utilitarianism. A rule-utilitarian, when confronted with a situation in which he believes that abiding by the rule will not in the present case be most beneficial, will simply modify the rule. Great disagreement may be generated over which consequences are in fact "good," which consequences should rec eive greater or lesser weight, and what probability should be assigned to different future consequences. Modern critics of utilitarianism also note that ultimately utilitarianism must seek non-utilitarian answers on assigning boundaries and values around the measurement of activities and values associated with the calculation of utilitarian systems. All these matters serve to cause what appears to be an exceptionally practical system to become less and less practical (Donaldson et al. 2002). As a passenger in version 2, I would not push the person and let him die. These actions would be considered as intentional killing of person and could lead to imprisonment. In terms of deontological ethics, actions should be based on rule-based morality. The approach considers an action as morally right if it conforms with a proper moral rule. An action that violates the rule but results in beneficial actions is still considered wrong. The
